Economic Wing

The Economic Wing of the Embassy of Bangladesh in Japan acts as the economic diplomacy arm of Bangladesh – focusing on aid mobilization, investment promotion, trade expansion, and strategic economic cooperation with Japan. Its role is especially significant given Japan’s position as Bangladesh’s top development partner and a key source of finance, technology, and investment.

Core Functions of the Economic Wing:

1. Strengthening bilateral economic relations: Promote and deepen economic cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan by maintaining close liaison with Japanese ministries, agencies, and economic institutions.

2. Resource mobilization and development cooperation: Mobilizing foreign aid, concessional loans, and technical assistance is particularly important as Japan is Bangladesh’s largest bilateral development partner. In this regard, the Economic Wing works with agencies like JICA and other development partners for project financing and implementation.

3. Promotion of trade, investment, and business linkages: Encourage Japanese investment in Bangladesh and facilitate Bangladeshi exports to Japan by building networks between investors, entrepreneurs, and business communities of both countries in collaboration with agencies like JETRO, JBIC and others.

4. Coordination with international financial and development institutions: Engage with multilateral bodies (e.g., World Bank, ADB, IMF, other development partners active in Japan) for economic cooperation and project negotiations, if necessary.

5. Policy coordination and economic diplomacy: Represent Bangladesh’s economic interests and policies in Japan; and also support formulation and implementation of external economic policies.

6. Expansion of development cooperation: Facilitate both vertical (sectoral) and horizontal (institutional) expansion of cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, energy, transport, and human resource development.

7. Maintaining inter-ministerial relations: Maintain working relations between the Finance, Foreign Affairs, Commerce, and other relevant ministries of Bangladesh and Japan.

8. Monitoring economic trends and reporting: Analyze Japan’s economic policies, market trends, and investment climate; and report opportunities, risks, and challenges to the Government of Bangladesh.

9. Supporting Bangladeshi stakeholders: Assist Bangladeshi businesses, diaspora investors, and delegations visiting Japan; and also support other Wings for trade fairs, investment forums, and official visits.

10. Participation in negotiations and international forums: The Economic Minister participates in bilateral and multilateral economic meetings, aid negotiations, and development forums relevant to Bangladesh-Japan cooperation.
