Details
The Governments of Bangladesh and Japan signed three loan agreements amounting to 22,286 Crore Taka for boosting implementation of Covid-19 responses, Dhaka MRT Line 1 and power generation in Matarbari. On November 22, 2021, ERD signed Loan Agreements with JICA, for Japanese ODA Loans of up to 292,279 million Japanese Yen (approx. Bangladesh Taka 22,286 Crore) in total for one program and two projects:
1. COVID-19 Crisis Response Emergency Support Loan (Phase 2)
2. Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (Line 1) (II)
3. Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project (VI)
The Phase 2 of Covid-19 Crisis Response Emergency Support Loan is a budget support loan to be disbursed quickly for implementing emergency efforts in fighting against Covid-19 pandemic.
Despite the pandemic, JICA financed projects are moving forward steadily. MRT Line 1 Project has made substantial progress in detailed design and the bid has already been floated for land development of its depot area. Construction of Matarbari Power Project Phase 1 has shown significant progress too. The main equipment of the Project, the turbine and the boiler, are supposed to arrive in Bangladesh within couple of months.
Japan is the largest bilateral development partner of Bangladesh. This financial assistance in the form of very concessional loans will greatly support the development efforts of Bangladesh.
